Narasimha had completed his twelve years of virtuous life at a time when there was no more than one or two men on earth. The earth was then inhabited by birds, animals and serpents; but nobody had belonged to any religion; there were no abodes where people could live in devotion; nor did they believe in anything- not even in themselves. Narasimha lived with his mother, Sundari, who was a woman highly devoted to the Lord; she dwelt in a cave in the forest and was an expert in meditation and devotion. Adorned by many good qualities like faith, devotion and restraint of all the senses, Sundari had been blessed by Brahma. She was also known as Manorama. Narasimha was so attached to her that he used to sleep in her room along with her at night and roam around with her during the day. Narasimha's duty included carrying water from a hill for his mother's bath, fanning her while she slept and serving her in various ways. He was so devoted to her that he performed his duties not only with love but also with the joy of a devotee. He always remained near his mother and never went anywhere without her permission, nor did he have any friends or companions. The only pleasure he got was from being at his mother's lotus feet. It happened one day that as Narasimha was returning with water from the hill after seeing his mother bathe, he met a tiger who had just devoured a lamb and who was now desperately thirsty. Narasimha filled the vessel and gave it to him without asking for any remuneration; and then continued on his way back to his mother's cave. The tiger, who was on his way to a tank for drinking water, noticed the water vessel and thought that there might be some sweet-milk in it. He took it and on looking inside was greatly surprised to find that the vessel contained only water; at this he reproached Narasimha and said: "Narasimha, what a wicked boy you are! You make all your mothers drink water like this; why do you not give them milk? When your mother is thirsty you fail to give her even a drop of milk; how is it that she never weeps while you leave her thirsty?" With these words the tiger drank up the remaining water in the vessel. Narasimha was surprised at the behaviour of the tiger and felt very sorry; he decided to go back to the hill and fetch more water. While he was thus pondering, he noticed that it had begun to drizzle. He then thought that if his mother does not get water soon she will be unable to sleep; for this reason, without wasting any time he ran back, hoping that the rain would continue till he reached the hill. But by the time Narasimha had started towards home with fresh water in his vessel there was no trace of rain left in the sky. cfa1e77820
